The National Institutes of Health
(1999) say that "Losing weight
is the most common New Year's
Resolution, and one that is quickly forgotten".
It is estimated that 40% of Americans promise to
lose weight in the
New Year. Although 90% of the respondents lost very little or no weight
at all,
half of them gained weight instead (Thorpy, 2004). The recent
study on weight loss, general
health, and New Year's Resolutions reported
that the data shows "the average person giving up
their resolution
by February, only to return to their previous, unhealthy eating patterns".
